PENAMPANG: The Kadazandusun community is urged to unite with and render their support to the Huguan Siou, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan and the Huguan Siou’s institution.
Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Organising Secretary, Ceasar Mandela Malakun said that this was because the Huguan Siou’s institution can become the voice of the Kadazandusun community to demand for the community’s rights from the government.
He added that this will benefit the community, hence urging all members to be united in their support to the Huguan Siou.
“Let us all support him and thank him for his countless struggles for the sake of the Kadazandusuns,” he said.
Speaking at the 35th anniversary dinner in commemoration of Pairin’s installation as the Huguan Siou at the ITCC hall here recently, Mandela also said that many youngsters do not understand the importance of having a Huguan Siou.
“For many of them, it is merely a title. In this modern era and digital age, many even question the relevance of such an institution which they deem as archaic and lacking importance to the modern man,” he said.
“But nothing could be further from the truth. Today, when the Kadazandusuns seem so disunited and out of touch with their cultural heritage, the Huguan Siou must be seen as an institution that strengthens our unity and instill our love for our culture and our identity,” he said.
Pairin became the second Huguan Siou of the Kadazandusun community on July 1, 1984 at Balai Raya Kampung Tuavon in Penampang.
The first Huguan Siou was the late Tun Fuad Stephens.
