My kids have been perpetually hungry, and I feel guilty not being able to feed them enough with the small paycheck that I have. This is every parent nightmare — not being able to give enough, especially when it comes to feeding ones brood adequately. Feeding a family of four could easily cost a parent RM40 per lunch, and that is excluding the price of drinks in Kota Kinabalu. No wonder my wallet has been going emptier and emptier, and it doesn’t matter how much I try to save, the feat is simply too impossible, unless we all starve, which is not a very good alternative (as a matter of fact, it is a bad one since we could all get sick).
So, I came up with a list of places where we could eat for even less than RM5 per person, and that is inclusive of a glass of Chinese tea with ice (my fave) or water.
RM5 or less
- If you’re broke, like most of us, having a fulfilling meal may seem impossible, especially if you have several mouths to feed. This ‘kedai kopi’ (coffee shop) in Tg. Aru is every parents dream come true because you can have a bowl of rice and one chicken breast for only RM4.50 per plate. And add a glass of Chinese tea ‘ping’ which means cold Chinese tea, and you’ll only spend RM5 per person. So, that is my number 1 place for cheap in KK.
- In Kapayan, there are several places where you can have nasi campur for RM5 (excluding drinks).
RM7 or less, but more than RM5
- Head on to Penampang for Chicken rice, served with hot soup for only RM6. You can order pork or chicken dumplings for the same price.
- Pasta-Pasta @ Jalan Gaya serves a bowl of pasta2 for only RM6.50. The only place that serves cheap and filling food, I think, in Kota Kinabalu.
